I know what books I'll be looking into this next year, thanks to this video, Earliest Examples of the Mandela Effect. That chick's research goes back to 1999 and actually uses some well thought out science, which will be fun. I watched another vid, which lines up with conclusions I've come to myself over the years.

For instance, I discovered that the most interesting thought process follows the question "If I could go back and tell myself anything, what would it be?" I took that question very seriously for years and decided that everything I am doing NOW is the result of this question. Everything I ever wanted to understand about reality and why we are here is all coming to me. I concluded years ago that I am affecting my past, and that a lot of the weird stuff I seem to go through might actually be from me at a later date. I've had far too many coincidences, remote views, dreams that come true, and deja vus in my life to not be meaningful in some way, and I gravitated to synchronicity as I was looking for answers, which I've talked about many times. I've 'always known' who I need to be and what I need to be doing, I just didn't always know how and with what at the time. It's like I had to accumulate experience and knowledge, like you do in gaming, to be able to level up and do bigger things.

Here is one example of that process. For years I questioned faith if people assume praying changes nothing once a certain time has passed. How can an omnipotent god be constrained by something like time? (Especially now that we can visualize stepping outside of time ourselves.) I didn't realize I had the opportunity to test this until I found out later it worked. I was on my way to nursing clinicals at an insanely early hour, and about halfway there I had a sudden urge to pray for my kids to get to school safely. That was not a daily habit back then, and I was very distracted with pain issues, so it felt weird for that to come so strongly into my mind. I took it seriously and focused a few minutes on asking for my kids and I to all arrive home safely that day, and that the day be easy for all of us because it felt like things had been so hard lately. After we were all home hours later, I found out the school bus had just missed being broadsided on a major highway by a big transport truck. The kicker was that happened before I prayed, so where did that big urgent feeling come from? I immediately thought of quantum reality and figured time going forward or backward has no power over anyone I could possibly pray to about affecting reality, and that meant my prayer was still very meaningful and important after the event had passed, particularly because I didn't know about it. I think that the not knowing somehow gives us more power to affect change, and I don't mean that *I* changed anything, but that I inadvertently asked it to change and it did.

The key is the not knowing. The whole point is about going with your gut and focusing on what you want. What do you REALLY want? Give that all your focus for a quiet minute or two. This has become a daily habit for me. I use the form of prayer because I honestly can't not believe in someone being more powerful than me being able to see all this stuff from the outside. Given the new breakthroughs in cosmological thought about simulated universes, this isn't that big a stretch. I think our wording is very misleading, instantly lending to downplaying intent and purpose, but it makes total sense to me that we mimic our bigger universe by creating more digital universes ourselves.

I've turned this process into a shared journey.

And of course I played around. Since every time I do a search for ANYTHING and Benedict Cumberbatch usually pops up in there somewhere (hence #bengruity lol), I thought I'd do a deliberate search for "Benedict Cumberbatch Mandela Effect" to see if anything pops up, especially since he's got one of the largest fandoms in the world possibly mass mind quantum changing everything around us, right. Well, guess what. The only things I could find at all were one person swearing his name had really been Cumberpatch, one person certain he'd played Doctor Who at some point, and one person swearing they'd witnessed him dying in a car accident with a girlfriend that apparently doesn't exist now. You'd think there would be a lot more weirdness around as big a deal as him. Maybe the fandom has locked him into place. Benlocked.

Pinkyween commences

Trigger caution, graphic violence.

Random search surfing around youtube and this caught my eye. "Somebody once challenged me to make a Heroes music video to a song by Britney Spears and still make it seem badass." I had to watch it immediately.

And from there it was me and the headphones while Bunny tortured Papa after he got home from work.

I have missed so much live tweeting this year. I'm so torn.

I'm even regretting saying I was tired of so much TV last year.

Sorrynotsorry.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now it's later. Still wired on the pred, everyone else is in bed. It's so weird being pred-jacked during a crash off a long euphoric ep, even though it was semi-controlled.
Tomorrow is the big day.
I've had 8 years to think that all through. I've spent 8 years working on becoming more emotionally healthy and regaining back some of what I lost sinking into physical disability. I have worked very, very hard on not being selfish and being present in the moment for the people I love around me. I can honestly say I'm no longer hateful, but I have to honestly admit I'm still very angry, and I don't foresee ever not crashing through so many painful memories every time the first week of October rolls around.
I am quite jealous of people my age who still have both their parents. I feel very sad for people I know who lost both parents already at a younger age than I did. I can't imagine either scenario. All I can feel is jealousy, sadness, pain, and all kinds of anger.
Two years ago I wrote interpretations. My mom had absolutely no moral support raising an autism spectrum child in the middle of so much other stuff that she was dealing with. I am finally old and wise enough to see all that from the eyes of a peer instead of a child. I feel so bad for her sometimes looking back that I can't stand it, and I hide that I cry, like she used to hide that she cried. I can't go back and fix all the misunderstandings, and even if I could try, I would probably make it all worse somehow.
I spent most of my life in hard shutdown because I was very strictly not allowed to have meltdowns without what some people would now consider fairly severe consequences. I've spent the last ten years talking to a psychologist untangling so much mess, and that is very seriously only the tip of a very big iceberg.
If there is anything I can say to parents of autism spectrum kids, of any neuroatypical kids, it's please just love them. I've seen people treat dogs better than they treat their own children, and it breaks my heart. I've seen people treat strangers more kindly than they treat their children, and it shreds me. To judge anyone for something they cannot help, never asked for, and don't yet have the capacity to deal with is really harsh, especially when it turns into corporal punishment and very mean faces and words. Children on autism spectrum, especially, can be notorious for retaining hardcore highly detailed memory recordings for decades, and the behavior you exhibit might be either replayed or spelled out years later.
I'll be spelling mine out. I won't be doing it to be mean, but to be kind. Sometimes it's important to see how ugly something gets in order to veer away from it in future. And, honestly, I'm older now than a lot of the autism parents out there freaking out, and they really do need to know that giving birth to 'broken' children isn't the end of the world. We're all broken. Anyone who can punish a small child without any rescue or defense for simply being broken is broken themselves.
My mom was very broken, and I want to go back in time and scoop her up as a tiny child and rescue her. I'm very sad she never got to see me arrive to this point. One day I'll share a picture of her looking so sad as a small child that everyone will wonder what happened, and then the smiles in all the rest of the pictures after that will look different.
I drown in empathy. Don't let anyone ever tell you auties have no empathy. I had to turn mine off and get mean and cold to survive, but all the soft sad stuff is very intact and the recordings are all still there. I wasn't even five years old when I asked my mom why she was sad, and she never allowed me to ask her that again and never talked about it. Imagine what must have gone on inside of her to stuff that back in so hard and never let anyone see it. We saw her anger, yes. I've come to realize it was a privilege to see her sad. Not depressed, not fearful, not anxious, but sad. Why was it so important to hide the sad?
Dear autism parents- You have my full support. I was a difficult child, and once I realized I had power, I sometimes made it more difficult for my emotionally weak mother to function. We were quite a pair. I sabotaged her in very subtle ways, and she crumbled and did some very mean things back to me. By the time I was in high school our relationship was so broken that we never recovered from living without that parent/child bond. I felt unforgiven and she felt hated, because she didn't forgive me and I hated her.
Stuff like that is really simple to fix once you realize that's what's going on.
ixnay on the elfsay imstay
Stuff happened this week.
click for the thread
Wonder if that would happen a lot more if I'd boost this post. I've never boosted a post on Facebook, but I probably will once the book comes out. One of these will click to the twitter link, which already has over 400 impressions in less than 12 hours, the other will click to its new Autisable home.
And I really don't know if that had anything to do with waking up to a Google Alert that Janika Banks has been added to a German white pages listing on Denmark internet.
This is translated.
And I wanted to see if that's a real thing, and sure enough, comes up on page 3 in a Google search for Janika Banks. Brand new out of the bag.
A couple of years ago someone told me they were going to write up my Wikipedia page, and I laughed and said sure, go ahead. No one really has yet, but for some reason I've either been auto-boosted into legitimate search or manually entered by someone on a job or weirdly obsessed. I'm going with auto boost for now. There are so many automated info pages out there I could claim (traity was dumb, I had it for awhile and let it go), but that's way too much work.
Like I told a friend privately a few days ago- "If I don't get my crap done by end of summer, I'm an idiot. My launch platform has never been more visible."
So I get a porn boost right on top of #netneutrality, crack me up, and then I get a major Google Alert on top of my self-stim post. Never in any parallel dimension did I wildly dream of sex selling anything about Janika Banks. Wow.
:edit: Space Cowboy suggests putting pretty girls in vids to sell merch. Pretty sure some of us are in it for the actual music, so here you go.
Also, this is a thing. I have lifetime potential earnings of $33, crack me up. Bet that would change real quick if I could get some of my friends talking with me about Lexx and stuff. Anyway, you can get into this and click around, kinda fun checking out other channels. Very handy.
When you're autie with multiple dxs
This is something I've been bringing up for a long time, just not in these words.
Depersonalization Disorder: An out of body experience
All the stuff in that article has consumed me much of my life. I've written at length on reality and perception, and have been openly being extra careful and letting people know when things aren't feeling 'real'. Friends on twitter may or may not be aware of this, depending on how often they might link over to Pinky blog, but that article kinda condenses things into a nutshell for me. This bit especially- I can tick every single one of these in this list.
What Causes Depersonalisation Disorder?
What causes depersonalisation disorder is not fully understood, but it is thought that it is linked to a chemical imbalance in the neurotransmitters of the brain. This imbalance may make the brain vulnerable to depersonalisation disorder when in states of extreme stress.
According to the Mayo Clinic, causes of depersonalisation disorder may include:
  • Childhood trauma such as witnessing domestic violence or being abused
  • Growing up with a significantly impaired parent, such as by mental illness
  • Suicide or unexpected death of a loved one
  • Severe stress such as relationship, financial or work-related pressures
  • Severe trauma such as a car accident
I'm noticing it's much worse lately, so it's time for #transparency while I have a little time to share. I usually handle stuff on delay because of aspienado shutdowns, where I turn into Pinky Robot and don't have to feel all the stuff going on around me. Lately, though, I'm having to crunch some of that processing through a little faster as multiple deaths are rolling out and I feel oddly situated as a major player that's mostly not really inner circle, so I can't exactly be a wall flower and let it float over me, or float over it, or whatever floating usually takes place, but still vitally connected in sometimes crucial ways.
The best way I can describe the time jags are like when I'm playing on server and there is a bit of lag and my character gets jerked back a couple of steps and has to break a few blocks over again, or the lag might even spam a little, and the blocks blink in and out of existence no matter what I try to continue to do. If the lag gets bad enough, I time out and have to relog, which is what shutdown feels like. I don't often feel like I'm in 'real time' with other people, and have spent a frustrating lifetime figuring out this is what's really going on in my brain and that it's not normal. I'm so used to it that I take it for granted, and I've only really started talking about it the last few months. I mean, I shared the big reality break from 2012 that was a result of a supervised double hormone crash off meds that took about 3 months, but that went beyond my kind of normal lag/jag stuff. I'm not having a med or pain crisis to the point of causing this again, but emotionally *bam* I'm getting knocked off track a bit more than usual and it's really catching my attention lately.
I am still struggling to keep broken bits of timelines in some kind of order around certain parts of my life. I'm still attempting to reconstruct through old bits of papers, like my college class schedules, or a list of work experience I kept around for resumes that included to-from dates, or even like the time my oldest daughter suggested I look in the toilet for the year I got married because we built the house that year and toilets are dated- no wonder I thrive on social media timestamps. I can't blame the time jags on anything specific, because my brain is wonderfully adept at some things, but time itself slips out of my grasp. Y'all know I get my days, weeks, and even months mixed up. Well, it's kinda worse than usual this year.
So this weekend has been really tough, some of it was very public because we lost a friend but a lot of my personal stuff wasn't, and today should have been a typical epic fail mode where I forget stuff and stumble my way through, but it never happened. No, today was brilliant, I got all the things done, and I handled everything beautifully. But I wasn't 'me'. At least not the usual me. The me from the old days took over, the me that got me through high school and part of college, the me that showed back up in a new morph and got me through the 5 grueling dark years before I pulled myself back together with Pinky.
I knew as I was pulling out of the driveway this morning that she was back. I was cognizant the whole time and I (the 'me' who is typing this) pretty much sat back and let it all happen. I didn't fight for control, in fact, I was relieved and grateful. I hadn't seen that side of me, to use a phrase, take over like that in a long time. The me who survives no matter what.
She has a name. I very rarely ever share it. The morph part has a very public name. I don't often use it, either. Together they are very strong, and I say they because I didn't feel like I contributed to that strength. Normally we all fit together and we are 'I', but today, I definitely switched out for awhile.
I begged my mom to take me to a psychiatrist when I was in high school. In college I walked into campus counseling and asked to be tested, because I told them I felt like I was crazy. I have been assured a number of times by several professionals that I'm nowhere near crazy (I passed an MMPI just fine in college) and that I'm handling life rather well. Inside I feel like a messy wreck, and I don't feel like I'm handling anything well at all. My current psychiatrist mentioned I'm feeling dissonance between what is real and what I feel is real. It goes a little beyond the kind of self flagellation that people do when they're down on themselves, but the weird thing is I don't do that. I have never done that. That's where the narcissism has come in really handy. I don't think I'm all that and a bag of chips, but I do think I'm an important person in people's lives, and I believe my being here on this planet is important and supposed to change things, but that only works out if I get off my butt and actually do stuff that makes a difference, so it's really rare for me to fall into a self pity pit.
I believe we are ALL important and here to change things.
I believe it's ok to believe this, and I'm pretty sure that's what's kept me going. Reality is what I make it, and the reality I create around me is my 'real'. It may not always mesh with other people's 'real', but at least I can be part of other people's lives.
Pinky has been wrestling all the snakes back into the peanut can, but I don't think that's going to happen now. Claudia burst forth today, bringing Jacky with her, and dayam if stuff didn't GET DONE. I would wish I could be like that all the time, except when I'm in Claudia mode, I'm usually pissed and don't give a f* about whatever, and I'm kinda tough for people to take like that. Jacky brings an undercurrent of dark emo med addict withdrawal kind of personality, and together they kicked ass today and told me not to worry about it.
That was my 'real'. I didn't fantasize, I didn't make up internal dialogues, I didn't think about it, I just sat back for awhile working on word stuff like I love doing. And now this is me practicing for getting thoughts organized before the book goes out. Lotta people out there analyzing autie stuff half to death, and I am soooo way past omg I'm autistic. Let's apply it to #allthethings now, shall we? And ppl who read my stuff, don't rip this off and run with it on your own stuff asplaining it all out for the noobs like you own it. Own your own stuff. This is my stuff. Everyone needs to get on personalizing their stuff. Really tired of this 'we' crap. (I changed that last word, Claudia was trying to take over.)
Autisable profile
This is my personal intro on my activity wall at Autisable.com. For newer autie bloggers coming out now, I go back to 2008 as Bluejacky and have been autie, spoonie, and depression blogging for nearly ten years. And scifi and other entertainment commentating. Lots of that, going back to 2004, actually. I go back to 1994 in internet fandoms. Anyway, if you are interested in autie blogging, whether on spectrum yourself or someone you know or whatevs, Autisable is pretty awesome and we'd love for you to join.
Hello =)
For ppl who don't yet follow me anywhere, I'm a huge scifi & Sherlock fan, and I keep up fairly well with the real time breaking news from the Sherlock/DoctorStrange/Benedict fandom in real time on twitter, plus live tweet Syfy, TWD, and other shows with the #Snarkalecs, and I've got Lexx groups and pages and a fan blog that's been translated into several languages by other fans. I lightly stay in touch with a lot of people who are really spread out, which is ideal for me since I don't do deeper friendship groups well. My friends on twitter who survived the Pond of Death era are really solid, even though I never got back on social media to make friends. Took awhile, but I think I've about found my balance on the webs.
I've made it pretty clear in several places that I don't respond to "hi" or "how's it going" prompts, nothing personal. Hard experience has taught me that vague chatter usually comes with some kind of agenda that diverts my focus, and that usually winds up in what I call exploding bridges. No more blowing up bridges, which means I don't respond to chain yanking. Aspienado is not a doll with a string for personal entertainment, although I still fall for it all the time because Pinky Robot has an automatic response and comply program. I'm far too congenial until I realize I'm a pet on a leash, and then I bite. Nine years with a psychologist is helping me understand why I repeat this pattern over and over. It's called being 'easily led'. I have a court appointed payee based on glitchy cognitive documentation. I'm high IQ and unreliable for time orientation and following directions. If I were Star Fleet mapping planets, I'd be the one who'd stay in the same uniform for 48 hours straight and show up in the wrong conference room, but my report would be immaculately detailed.
While others carefully walk the line of self discovery either with the #actuallyautistic tag or vicariously through their kids, I'm full blown diagnosed aspienado and don't apologize for who I am. I am the bull in the china shop in an eyeblink even when I'm trying my best to behave, and the most challenging thing I've learned on the webs from PR is 'don't respond'. I don't realize I accidentally shred people mowing them over, and I very obviously cannot shut up when I get started, even though I am very quiet in real life and read, research, and study prodigiously. I am driven like an addict toward information input and processing (I'm a compulsive reader, and yes, that is a real thing), and a friend of mine nailed it asking me if I'm a robot. Yes, I am Pinky Robot, learning to integrate all my split web personalities into a psychologically healthy whole.
I'm also YabloVH on the Mo Creatures minecraft multiplayer server, so if you love minecraft, I do, too. =)
I'm not into negativity or any kind of side taking. I used to eat people for sport or think it a challenge to asplain stuffs, now I think there are better things in life I can be doing. I'm very thankful for Joel and Autisable being there for my first step into public sharing the real stuff in my head, and I've been practicing being public on Pinky blog so I don't blow the internet up and then hide in my cave. I'm not into comments, commentary, praise, stick poking, or general "Happy whatever-day-of-the-week-this-is", but I've found my niche in fandoms and memes, and no one will ever be able to pry my brain tentacles out of that crazy abyss.
My goals are simple: Stay public no matter what, and keep sharing my journey integrating into a more socially functional and psychologically healthy person so that I can be good for other people, and especially help despairing parents from the other end- I am your child all grown up now, and I've even had my own kids. It took me a long time to connect all my dots so I could see the bigger picture, but I understand now my mom didn't get what she needed from me, and even though it's too late for her to see me now, I can still encourage other parents who are still getting through the hard stuff with their kids. I was a screamer who got motion sick every single time I was in a car and screwed up every holiday visit with relatives and argued about jots and tittles and shut down everyone trying their hardest to give me a hug. Hi, I am aspienado, and I know now that I love my mother very very VERY much. Please know your kids will get there, many of them probably a lot faster than I did.
And now I'm going to run off and forget to come back here for awhile, because that's what I do.
normal childhood pressure
Sometimes I wake up so full of self doubt I can barely think through making breakfast and getting dressed, much less handle whatever else is coming later in the day. It helps to go back and read things like 'I Was Crying All the Time' from 1989.
This isn't about being harsh on Kristy, because I love her. This is about context that helps me understand why my Plan is important. I love that article because for the 'back in the day' level of content, it's actually very good. Mental health was still very young, and diagnostic criteria was still being hotly debated. For it all to sift down to pressure, and missing getting to be a kid... well, that impresses me the most. That is my precedent for what I'm doing now.
My pressure growing up was about being told not to cry after I'd been hit, about having to help kill, dismember, and eat pets I'd raised from babies, about hours of food processing and prep that breaks child labor laws, about not getting the health care or emotional support I needed, about having to learn how to pretend I was ok or be punished for acting out.
I was not ok. I'm not ok now. I've never been ok. But neither have either of my parents. The more I look into what makes us who we are and the societies that weave the fabrics of our lives, the more I see that being broken is partly how most of the human race has survived. We're all broken.
But back to me. If it's this obvious, why is this so important? Because an entire group of people actually wants me and my kind 'wiped out'. Because several other groups of people misunderstand my kind so much that they torture their own children. Because even my own kind are cruel and eat their own.
Never mind that this is all very complicated and layered with decades of socioeconomic history and culture clashes. Never mind that we live in tiny microcosms and misinterpret why people are the way they are. Never mind that we live in an age of me, me, me.
I do mind. I want answers. I want to know why EVERYTHING. I want to understand how and when and where, and I want to tell the story. I spent years getting a sociology degree generously peppered with everything there is to know about human history going back 25,000 years. I mostly wanted to know how in the world my parents got off on turning a blind eye while they tormented me, but I have learned so much along the way that I think I'm nearly able to show how this whole process works in a series of intimate stories shared both subjectively and objectively.
I'm able to do this because I was born especially equipped to solve this problem.
In the meantime, I'm relieved that I have a definition of what normal childhood pressure is supposed to be, because I'm so messed up that I can't even imagine.
down the rabbit hole
The Woodpecker Wars are going full defcon this winter. Over the years @bonenado has been plugging up holes in our siding, which is problematic because most of the holes are at least 2 stories up and very difficult to get to. Tufts of insulation sometimes trail out and look really bad. If you've never experienced what a tiny bird can do to a big house and can't imagine it being a big deal, all you have to do is search 'woodpecker damage'. And since I live in Mirkwood, it's a big deal. We get at least 3 different kinds of woodpeckers drilling holes, and since we've had flying squirrels move into birdhouses, we're wondering if we've got a flying squirrel (or even a regular sized squirrel) living in the attic now, and while some of you go 'awww, how cute!', it's actually really gross if it dies inside the house and stinks for 2 weeks. We've had mice and even a snake die in the walls, so yeah, kinda need to stop the hole makers.
(Can you imagine if that were a minecraft problem? Egads.)
I've been noticing my normally expected anxiety attacks around showering seem to be calming down lately, so I guess I'm successfully dealing with my crisis. This big meltdown thing came between Bunny's mama and I while I was dealing, didn't talk for 13 days. Reconnected yesterday, I think we're ok now. Getting through the rest of the month intact will be about focusing on my own path and not using other people's distractions to jump willy nilly hither and yon, triggering and retriggering like mad and risking burninating the peasants.
So... I went down the rabbit hole.
I've been holding back from a real rabbit hole for ages. I have a history of 'disappearing', so I made sure my personal support network was solid and that my launch platform was secure, and took the plunge. After a wonderful day with Kai blowing craters into the landscape spawning everything conceivable in minecraft all at once, I did a quick assessment and made an executive decision to release my inner rabbit and see how I do.
I made a new singleplayer world called 'uffda', which I mentioned the other day, and I have been playing sans cheats nonstop. I started with absolutely nothing, and aside from using F3 coordinates to see where I am once in awhile, and using beds I make to force the night to switch to day, I haven't cheated once. I haven't switched to creative mode at all. I went hard- missed meals, ignored TV, stopped bathing. I immersed myself until I was minecrafting all night in my sleep. But every morning I made myself touch base on Pinky blog first, and I made sure that I was tearing myself away in small time batches to run laundry through machines and make food for Scott. Otherwise, excepting brief spurts checking notifications, I have logged hours and days of solid minecraft.
While I've been super absorbed, I've managed to cut my caffeine in half, lose 5 pounds, and out of the blue coordinated my launch again. I'm writing. Sweet, unintended side effects. But realistically, every bit of this has been monitored and I'm checking in with people because I just got through one of the worst meltdowns I've had in years, like super crumble and stand back lest ye be consumed with flames while this ship goes down. This aspienado has reached a place where there is *nothing* anyone can do or say to make me feel better, and my dearest risk their lives just reaching out to get me talking. I can't say enough for one brave soul who has no clue how their own world became my float device a couple of times.
If I weren't involved with Lexx groups on facebook, I'd have shut my facebook down this last week. If I weren't focused on future sales launch, all my blogs would have gone into private this last week. If I weren't determined to see this project through that I've been working on for several years, I'd have closed my twitter account this last week. Pinky made a promise not to go away again, plus real people have access to me now. I have real friends who can actually make real life contact now, and I. am. answerable.
I came back out to rebuild bridges.
you can tell I'm being extra serious because there aren't any pictures
@bonenado keeps getting contacted about beagles people in other states think we have for sale. Beagle puppies around here generally start at $450 and ship all over, so whoever messed that up, that's a pretty serious typo. I did a quick search and actually found the site, asking price for this particular pup was a little less, but there it was plain as plain, our phone number for contact. I sent off an email asking them to please fix that since we're getting calls about their dogs... And then I did a quick search that included the town name listed, bing, I'd be able to roll into town, knock on their door, and ask for a finder's fee every time they sell a dog because we redirected for them. noobs
Had a proper meltdown yesterday. I go months in between, so it was a big deal. I've been trained from childhood NOT to cry, NOT to make stuff about me, NOT to be a big baby, so it really does take a lot for me to go there, but once I do, it's just a rough day. I'm glad @bonenado was home, poor guy. Afterwards, I made some executive decisions based on the triggers that crescendoed me into the nether regions, and today I'm installing padded walls all over my facebook, and may soon go on an extinction hunt on twitter if a couple people don't stop. I'm finding myself associated with a certain mindset that assumes I enjoy grossness for it's own sake, and after the kind of tag jolt I got on twitter yesterday right on top my meltdown, I nearly threw up. It was that difficult for me to see. Whatever kind of joke that was, I didn't get it, and it was disgusting and revolting for someone to pull that not knowing me better. It came out of the blue, I still don't understand why it even happened, and I don't care. All I know is that's going to stop. I don't care if someone's been my friend for years on social media and is even an avid Lexx fan, if I'm continually sharing and blogging about neurodiversity and handling depression, that was just ignorant and completely dismissed me as a person, and I can't help wondering if part of that is because I've become so associated with the grosser side of entertainment via link sharing that someone assumed I'd automatically find it funny.
I would love to reassure people that I'm ok. It would be so easy to just say it's all cool and I'll be fine. But that's how people die, isn't it? That's how suicide happens. I said once that I don't want to do something that I really don't want to do but can't tell what's happening because things don't feel real. (One example is keeping a deck door locked with the shades drawn while @bonenado was out of town for a week in case I might do something stupid out there, like just flip over the railing onto the river rocks without a clue I was even doing it.) I'm currently going between several doctors about meds that are affecting my head and whether or not to start new ones or increase dosages, and these meds all have the side effect of disconnecting me from reality. While some people think it's awesome to get wasted, I have proven to be a poor decision maker on meds, and have found myself turning down the wrong way onto one way highway ramps, and even being driven home by highway patrol. I have been choosing to live with outrageous pain levels so I can remain cognitively competent and functional, which is very tongue in check given my cognitive disability ruling.
Writers generally research what goes into their books. I'm actually living mine, and it will be including disturbing things I'm working on with my psychologist. It's one thing to write or say this and that happened, it's another thing to live with the PTSD and disassociating and delayed response from having lived it, and THEN trying to talk about it and write it well. So many considerations are being taken for my parents' feelings and their own justifiable histories, so this is very intense work. And it. is. work. It's especially a lot of work being so careful with social medias and public blogging while I'm actually writing and proofreading and discussing the mundane technicalities with others, and often doing all these things while running dialogues on the side with family and friends or helping others take care of real life problems and setbacks.
So, and I'm sure very few actual people who follow me will even read this, please don't take it personally if I'm not interacting with you somewhere. I've been trying to keep up with several fairly big groups of people, and although I'd love to tit for tat, I really cannot.
Also, I keep falling for the talking to new people thing, and I've really gotta stop that, as well. I can't be doing the #actuallyautistic dance with a whole new group self discovering now. I've been out about my autism for a decade now, I've seen all the crap, and frankly, I'm kinda burned out just talking about autism. Those of you still writing ten thousand word blog posts every night describing every little facet of being *you*, brava, but I've got way more stuff going on, and when I talk about becoming an integrated Pinky, it's about my journey being past the self discovery part and seeing a much bigger picture now. Anyone can write a book about being autistic. Existential Aspie is about so much more than that...
Day 23- last of 2016 30 day challenge
How often does Christmas Eve Eve fall on a Friday? I looked it up. The only other time in the last 10 years that December 23rd fell on a Friday was 2011, and has happened only 17 times since 1900.
1988 was probably one of those big mistakes. I'm still working on the scattered pieces of that blur... If it's the night I think it might have been, I was very lucky to get home in one piece that night. I was playing pool at a bar at least 60 miles from home, trying to sober up with coffee, not realizing one of my friends kept spiking it and I was getting more wasted. When the other friend started giggling, I figured it out, got upset and left, and yes, drove all the way home on snow and ice wasted out of my mind. About 15 miles from my house in the inky black oneish in the morning kind of solitude way out on the windiest road through hills and hollows you ever saw (that all my friends drove drunk I don't know how many times), I missed hitting a stray heifer standing just off the highway, surprised us both, and I remember thinking "I hope the guy back there (I could see other headlights) doesn't hit her." Made it home, crashed into bed, still pissed. Next day heard there was a guy driving home from work who hit a heifer full on in the middle of the night, totaled his pickup, broken collar bone, shattered arm, really messed up, and it wasn't because he'd been drinking. It was because my car spooked the heifer, and then she lunged into his pickup. That happened near a drop off that could've easily killed either one of us if we'd rolled our vehicles.
I've often wondered about the way events might've rolled out for him if I hadn't been through that stretch first, since my being there was on a drunken whim. Our drunk driving may not actually kill anyone, but we don't see the wave of consequences we stir up in the universe around us, do we? I definitely altered the course of that man's life and history just being a fluky blip on his experiential radar that night.
New Year's Eve Eve is also on a Friday this year. That's like having an extra Friday two weekends in a row. Please be careful and get home without breaking yourselves. I don't even know how I'm still here sometimes.
Be f*ing prepared
I can't tell if the molasses I'm dragging through with internet this morning is because of the new W10 update yesterday or the space weather heads up about the coronal hole pointed at us that could affect satellites. Alls I know is it took half an hour just to refill some prescriptions and make a paypal payment on a yearly fee. Trying to get my mail up took the longest. Fighting with Chrome. Stuff.
Day Two of G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storm Conditions | NOAA / NWS Space Weather Prediction Center
published: Friday, September 30, 2016 05:45 UTC
A G2 (Moderate) Geomagnetic Storm Alert was issued at 2048 UTC (4:48 pm ET) on 28 September as effects from a large coronal hole high speed stream continue. Conditions are expected to reach G2 on 29 and 30 September before gradually decreasing in intensity to G1 (Minor) storm levels on 01 October.
So if you guys are experiencing super slow webs (visualize running into webs on minecraft lol), that's probably it.
This is day 12 of the head cold from hell. Reporting back to anyone just starting this or still stuck in the gummy center, the far side of this is leaving me dazed and uncaring. I can breathe again, but it's weird. Everything I do is through a wall of tired. I'm super glad I'm getting through this before TWD starts back up, before my sleep study, before my birthday, before Halloween...
Had my 6 month psychiatrist follow up yesterday. Yes, still counting xanax. Regular doc slops out the script, this guy tightens it up specifically. I don't dare drop any more pills. Of all the pills I clumsily drop, this script is the most often, and I'm such a germ phobe that I'll throw a pill away. But if we're counting, I will hoard every molecule even if I've stepped on one with a 2 year old athletic shoe that's been all over creation plus I'm allergic to latex. This guy doesn't play around. I'm a benzo and opioid problem from 30 years of pain management, and I may have to grit my teeth and clean off the stupid xanax again if I want to get control of this. Took two years to get off long term low dose benzo, stayed clean for almost 2 more years, back on super low dose to help control the euphoric episodes because I'm such an utter mess on head med side effects. The gabapentin is helping a LOT, so if I can keep tolerating it, this is a great time to start titrating off the xanax again. I may never be able to stay completely off it, but I refuse to wind up being the kind of patient going from doctor to doctor begging and swindling for scripts. I know too many people who wind up really miserable because they don't learn how their meds work or how to manage them properly like real addictions.
I had a bad day yesterday tightening up more tags and then realizing as I updated old posts that my hotlinked pix were failing, and thankfully I just shut the laptop and walked away. Overnight in my dreams I realized I missed paying the premium on the old blog some of those pix are hotlinked from, so I'm going to try that first before I spend a godawful amount of time trying to transfer and rehost sporadic content. I rarely hotlink that old stuff outside of my own new blogs, so this is an internal personal problem, screams in the night kind of thing, but I'm meticulous and this is harshing my blog fleet command.
Was zipping through incoming reader list in my email just now and glanced across the line 'making my eyes pulsate'. Here. *wow* Ok, moving on...
I'm not sure how I keep making a 'top interactors' list for people who get way more interaction from other people they tag. I ignore 90% or more of my incoming. There is one particular group that I really like but rarely get involved with that spikes my impressions sky high just responding to them once or twice a week. Sometimes someone outside that group will lurk my likes and butt in or retweet something, and it feels awkward to me and I suddenly feel protective of my spot in that gang. People who cross the gang streams on twitter without regard to what is actually going on really don't need to be doing that. And while I'm on that, I may as well mention the concern for my happiness in what to one person apparently looked like a horribly frustrating day based on ONE tweet, without even bothering to check my timeline, and it was monumentally awkward looking from them without any kind of awareness because I was in the middle of a spam joke on my husband. I know I've done my own awkward tweeting, as well, but I very seriously don't know why I even talk to some people in the first place and for some reason that makes us firm fast buddies for life. I was talking to @bonenado in the car yesterday about the biggest twitter mistake I ever made, and basically it's me actually feeling concern for people who blurt sadness or some kind of misunderstanding, and stupid Pinky Robot automatically thinks 'easy to fix because I can see this process from bigger picture', and then I wind up covered in silly string and lots more misunderstandings.
So Day 12 of this Head Cold From Hell will be fraught with doubt and self loathing, if you make it this far. Just giving y'all a heads up.
Oh, by the way, VALIDATED. Private convo with someone who gets a bunch of stuff about the big fandom asplosion I went through had never even heard of anything that. bad. Maybe I *should* write a little book about it like some of the fans have been pushing me to do... But not today. I'm still writhing in existential agony and mini crises. Yeah, in the ol' chair under the big light, psychiatrist asking me how my book is coming along... You do not know pressure until a guy who counts your pills asks you how your project is going. I'm going to spend the rest of my day facepalming through laundry and trying not to bang my head on various walls. To the handful of people who actually know what's going on- I cannot tell you how much I love you guys.
blue rabbit
click to take a beautiful tour through a stained glass art gallery
There are days I think my stories really aren't that big a deal, maybe I'm just making a big deal out of nothing, and I kind of walk away and go do something else for awhile. And then another day comes along, like last night watching Blindspot, Roman asking Jane if she remembered the rabbits they were given as children to take care of and then told to kill, and how he wimped out and couldn't do it but she could, how she always had it in her to get the job done. And I'm thinking Ok, not only does that validate my own childhood story, but mine trumps it 100% because of other stuff, so if that doesn't make me a badass coming off childhood trauma, I don't know what does, and that was just one little incident in story after story after story that leaves every professional I've talked to cringing.
I have such a disconnect that I don't realize the impact I have on people. When I first shared my rabbit story with a beta reader, I didn't even think to caution first. This whole project I'm wanting to launch first before anything else will necessarily have to be labeled with trigger warnings galore.
I was talking privately to a friend about something this week and suddenly realized I was way out of my emotional depth again and quickly tossed out how severe my disconnect is and I'm not sure how to relate, even though I obviously have no problem engaging and understanding. Despite having to continually shut down this weird hyperawareness I have of people around me, I cannot feel some of it. It's like having a sort of numb empathy. I'm still struggling with how to express this because it's crucial as part of the journey I'm sharing about what it's like in the mind of an aspie child on to adulthood.
I've attempted to communicate this description in a couple of my Lexx posts regarding the undead character Kai. I've studied in depth what research I can find (actually extremely detailed) about programming people via break and rebuild and how that creates the disconnects needed for people to be able to handle doing some really horrific things without falling apart. I've super briefly mentioned in passing a few times over the last couple of years that I believe this is what happened to me as a child via 'natural' societal brain training and culture clashing held firmly together with rigid belief systems, and how this is ideal for mass enculturing future citizens.
Aspienado is the East Wind, as Mycroft fondly taunts poor Sherlock with.
The interesting thing, to me anyway, is that I'm no longer angry. I'm done with the anger part. I'm in the more practical, even heuristic part of all this discovery now. Having actually experienced this life has lent so much more depth to learning concepts that any amount of mere research could never aspire to. It's one thing to make statements based on opinions based on what others report, it's another to make statements based on experience.
I know I bring up Sherlock a LOT, but I can't escape that the rabbit they're looking for is named Bluebell.
click for an incredible hint
That's actually beside the point, but the entire Sherlock thing was perfectly timed with my pinata cracking open and all the jeweled candy flying out, and the blue rabbit is just one of the jewels I'm sorting through.
One of the most interesting conundrums I've run into, and it happens quite often, is talking to people who don't realize they've been traumatized. Children are very easily traumatized, especially if there is already an emotional and/or neurodiversity schism in the family (including mental illness in either or both parents), and so many of us have been taught to suck it up and be tough that it takes years of gentle excavation into a person's psyche to finally help them see they've so plastered over a traumatic event that undid them that even they can't see how traumatizing it was until they finally break through and then have nervous breakdowns. Or sometimes the breakdowns come first, and then it's all about sorting out the stuff that flew apart. All those sparkly memories...
The human brain is very good at systems recovery, for the most part. There are so many ways a human being can continue to seemingly function, and even function well, despite having gone through trauma that would easily break someone else who grew up sheltered and never learned all the little tricks for self protection. This is so common that the people who have developed these tricks actually take pride in them, and sneer down on the weaker ones who fall apart over more trivial nonsense. After all, what is dropping an ice cream cone on a sunny day compared to being horrifically abused in a very dark place with no rescue?
My blue rabbit wasn't exactly abuse. In fact, I'll vouch for it being the most absolutely brilliantly 'innocent' abuse ever invented. I will make a case that this perpetual breaking down and rebuilding machine that is society goes so far back that we think it's part of our group psychological health, and that the very people who shun 'bad' things themselves perpetuate the ability for bad things to keep existing.
I completely broke one sunny day somewhere in the first grade. I didn't cry. I didn't understand enough to cry. But I can go back now over all the moments floating through my tiny head and see that I went into a sort of permanent shock. I grew up without a single emotional connection to a single adult around me, including my parents, and it wasn't because they were mean. It was because they'd already been broken themselves.
The beta reader wasn't able to talk about it very much except to relate that it was extremely upsetting, just a few words telling a childhood story. The odd thing was that even writing it, I barely felt anything, but I somehow knew it was important. That was the first time I shared it with anyone, and now, just from that one reaction and talking to my psychologist and a couple of other people and loads of thought afterward, I can see that what I'll be sharing goes far beyond simply growing up autism spectrum in a rigid world.
I'm so glad I never got that published yet. I'm at this *wow* place where I can see a whole bunch of crucial plastering I still hadn't peeled down yet.
Ok, back to my day. I just did a retweet spam of last night's Benny C Pink Floyd crash (yeah, right in the middle of this, thanx @bonenado).
Yeah, that #bencongruity was exciting, ok, moving on. Back to my own little world.
because I'm getting to that place where all this really matters now
I had a wonderful day out today, despite my resistance to leaving the house earlier this morning, as per my whining on twitter. I don't feel especially better or more capable, and my head is still a bit chaotic and the pain is kinda rumbling around looking for stuff to really DO, but overall, I'm actually in a fairly decent mood.
I know some of you still erroneously think I'm brave or something, but you don't see anything more than I tell you, and even though I've been way more honest than many of you will ever be about your lives (since it's going into a book, geez, it'll be out there anyway, right?), here are some details I haven't shared yet.
Now, keep in mind as you read the bullet points below that I am still an intelligent person capable of learning to effectively communicate and that it was my choice to share my head so that those of you who are caretakers and parents for people like me can understand a little more what's going on in our noggins. Also please keep in mind that I was born like this, grew up with this, and was forced to hide it and fake being 'normal'. If a messed up neuroatypical like me can successfully tackle life, I have faith in the rest of you hanging in there, too. The fibro is a given and I cinched that because it's pretty severe, but what carried the weight of the disability case was my 'mental illness' that I didn't even know I had.
This is straight from my disability papers, documentation of notes over time as noted by a panel of judges-
  • 2007- Axis I clinical disorders of adjustment disorder with anxiety, axis II deferred but with narcissistic feature, axis V GAF of 60.
  • 2008- depressed mood with congruent affect, Asperger's, GAF of 50. Note by panel "These impairments are not slight and have more than a minimal effect on the claimant's residual functional capacity found below. Consequently, they are "severe", as set forth" etc.
  • Long paragraph detailing exactly what I cannot handle in a work environment "and she lacks the capacity to respond appropriately to supervisors, coworkers, and usual work situations on a sustained basis." All my symptoms, both physical and mental, were considered consistent.
Ok, bottom line is I am autism spectrum with some personality and mood disorder issues that sometimes drop me into a 'needs supervision' category, meaning that I compulsively swing with my moods and obsess about death a lot and have a really weird sense of humor and barely hide my inability to play well with others, if I can hide it at all. Wow, I sound like twitter...
There are a LOT of us out there. We are not alone. Not all of us wind up on our faces in a legal hearing about our impairments and come out weeping and feeling like a total failure like I did because that happened after all the effort I put into being smart and strong and independent. I failed to hide it better. I failed to pass for normal. I. Wept. I was very sternly taught (with excessive punishment) to hide all that stuff, and I got so good at playing the survival game that I wound up wobbling my way into a degree, through a few jobs I never got fired from, and even still married after 23 years AND raising a stepkid to boot.
Mental illness isn't the end of the world. Being a mood swinging self harming on the edge of suicidal emo and/or death goth isn't *bad*.
We are different.
And even though it doesn't feel like it 98% of the time, we're ok. We really are, because we care about other people even when we suck and act like we don't, we cry when life hurts even when no one ever sees it, and every single day we make the decision to be here, and that makes what we do in the world around us that much more important, because being here means we change history.
It's easy for me to go get lost in minecraft or whatever else I'm writing on or stuff around the house, but while I'm thinking of it, I just want to let you guys know that if I can so utterly fail as a human being (I turned down an interstate drug run offer from a drug lord, not because I could lose my kid, but because sooner or later I'd logically wind up in jail, so I'm the first to admit I'm not the best mom in the world) and still turn out ok, you can too.
Much love. 💟💓💗
points of view
One thing I struggle with as a writer is conveying my point of view to people who've not seen things the way I've seen them. People interact all the time, objective and subjective get mashed around all the time, feelings go up and down all the time.
I've talked about my difficulty with the way humans can "anthropomorphize, ascribe, and project their own feelings and points of view on others around them." Things that happen between people might be seen one way by one person and another way by another person, and what one person thinks about what another person does or goes through is usually entirely subjective to how that one person sees things in the first place.
Sometimes I run into misunderstandings where I can see the heart of the problem is a lack of knowledge about another person's point of view. While I might see an entire scenario one way, another person sees it another way, and without a great big truckload of awkward attempts at explanatory words and some very hurt feelings that must be overcome on both ends, that gap will never be filled in or bridged over. It remains a chasm of sorts that must be ignored to go on.
Aspienado is a fixated problem solver and has a really hard time letting go of something left unsolved. Pinky is a diplomat trying to drag Aspienado away from the chasm. The chasm isn't important, Pinky says. Ah, but it's everything, Aspienado says. That's where it all started, remember? And Pinky very quietly says Yes, but maybe trying to solve that problem will start it all over again, and the sadness would engulf us this time. And then Aspienado starts remembering all the engulfedness and Pinky tells Aspienado to shut up.
I see something someone else doesn't. Even attempting to describe what I see could turn into the most poetically tragic emotional suicide. I've already seen the cost of misunderstandings. How dare I even think to go there again.
And yet... it's a writing challenge. *plunging into the abyss*
This playlist is "part of #aspienado's journey through relationships.. I intro'd this playlist on a Pinky post called "~metaphorically~". The playlist first went public on Oct 30, 2015 and has over 400 views. I know that's not phenomenal, but in a world utterly saturated with Sherlock playlists, it's not bad, either.
a long, dusty road
I would love to have a talk with my psychologist about the very fine lines between wonderfulness and assholery that I'm willing to microscope into during my soul search for who I really am in my friendships. In broadest terms, I used to blow up bridges, and now I don't. In more specific terms, I own that I create emotional interfaces that sometimes get wildly misinterpreted and I'm learning how to avoid that in future by studying how I keep creating monsters in the present. In minute definition terms, I seem to bring out the worst in people after showing them what I see as the best in them.
I think the problem I'm having is that some of the people I attract tend to already have latent or hidden talents for entangling emotional time and space, and I fuel it into growth with the sort of honesty that sees deeper into souls than most people usually see, or at the very least, don't bring up in conversation beyond placating platitudes. I see that lost kitten behind the dragon, or the tiny little girl crying in the dark behind the princess. I see the missing link between heart and head that can't quite define why a sunset on a lonely beach brings a tear that no one else sees behind the photographic bragging. I see the things that crush us, the dreams that lie shattered, the way our souls retreat into places no one can find. I dare to walk into other people's heads and find them.
And then I dare to sit with them in the one place no one else ever does, and talk about the real stuff no one else ever hears. I'm like the breeze that whispers into an emotional window and touches the sadness and lifts up the eyes and looks into them. I'm the one who isn't afraid to see who people really truly are.
That sounds wonderful, doesn't it? But it's terribly flawed. I'm not a breeze, I'm a person. And the seeing only goes one way. Just because I can see in the dark doesn't mean I can illuminate another mind. Being able to get in so far doesn't mean it's safe, for either of us. But that's what we all want, isn't it? Someone to find us, get to know us, understand us. I'm drawn to understand how people come to be who they are, but it comes with a price.
I started down this road a long time ago when I asked myself how people can use each other like dryer sheets and then toss them aside. And then the tossed aside people pick up the same bad habit and that behavior spreads. Everyone who is waiting for a hero winds up becoming someone who throws another person away. It's like the two things can't mix- if you're waiting for someone to love you, you can't be the one who loves someone else. Sooner or later someone has to say I'm going to love someone even if they don't love me back. Even if it hurts, even if they wind up alone, that is the only way they can turn to the next person and be what that person needs. No one can be what another person needs until they have risen above being tossed aside like a used dryer sheet. To wait to be useful to someone's emotional whims again becomes ridiculous in hindsight, a dirty bad drug, and the habit is really really hard to kick.
Out of that rose the idea that we either sit in self pity or learn selflessness. Self is in our way. If we continually define the world around us by our self perception, we always lose, because all day long our self perception is challenged, and we build very thick walls of self validation or, at the very least, justification. If we are behind walls justifying ourselves, we cannot come out and love someone else. It doesn't work that way. We can wave friendly flags from inside our fortresses, but we can't share what's real if we're blocking the world from showing us ourselves in a mirror the way other people see us.
How do we walk out from behind our own walls? I've been working on this for years. Years and years of scaling my own walls, imagine that. I didn't just have a fortress and a moat around me, I had a labyrinth even I had a hard time figuring out. Self sabotage is the most dangerous enemy we have. Locking one's self away becomes a sad and scary kind of self torture other people don't understand unless they've done it themselves. Like a house of mirrors, eventually we must question- which is the real me? I've been presenting as someone for so long with so many layers of facade that I don't remember my own real feelings anymore, beyond resentment and self pity and bitterness. I don't remember why I locked myself away, even if I do find the moment and relish replaying it in my mind.
Some of us bury our souls deeply under mountains of deflection and then sit very far down inside it wanting to know why no one tries to get in and find us. Why does no one really care? And then we go around checking all our locks again, making sure whoever does try to get in will have to work very hard at it. They'll have to earn it. Even if we'd never do the same thing back for another person, we expect someone else to invest all that work into finding out what makes us tick.
Self discovery is a journey. Everyone says that. What if you got so scared of yourself locked away in the dark that you became desperate to get out? What if you lost where you put all those keys to all those locks? What if the monster breathing down your neck already knows you so intimately that you actually think it would be worth trading your soul to escape it? Except that monster IS your soul. You can't trade something away that is actually you. I got so bad under my mountain that I started chopping parts of myself off.
On April 29, 2008 I wrote A Long, Dusty Road, which I'm going to copy here. This is something that's going to wind up in Existential Aspie. I've put some of the background story through several experimental rewrites, most of them public, one through a couple of beta readers, so some of you have seen part of this before, but you might not have seen the rest, unless you're one of the older lurkers. I'm working on grasping how to share a big concept in as few boring words as possible, but this post from 2008 is the first time I ever shared it with anyone. Maybe the rewrites weren't necessary.
About 20 years ago, in my mid 20's, I was destroying myself with alcohol and starvation.  I didn't see it that way, most people don't at that age.  At that age we are indestructible, wacked back and forth with self love and self hate, dreaming big dreams and not having a clue how to reach them.
I reached an event horizon and sucked myself right into the black hole of my soul.  I've been bad places, seen bad things.  Somehow I tripped gaily through like a lamb through a slaughter house, oblivious to the horrors around me.  I had no feelings about it.
I hung out with a drug lord in Phoenix back then.  He was underground, on the run from California, establishing new territory for a new purple marijuana cross that was all the rage on the coast while he covered as a pizza delivery boy.  Basically ripping the rug out from under the local drug lords, getting ready to move big shipments cross country.  Offered me a run, I turned it down.  He was 17, slick and professional.  They were all young.
I never dealt, never bought.  Compared to other people, I barely used.  I did love alcohol, though.  And I was this kid's friend.  I hung out with his girlfriend.  He could trust me because I didn't care.  I didn't take sides, didn't care about money, had no other friends.  Autism may actually be what kept me alive through that, I don't know.
Rode with him one day to a part of town I hadn't been.  It's actually a huge city, sprawled over 50 miles in every direction, some of it nice, some of it crap.  I loved it out there, gorgeous sky.  Had a good job in a 4-story hospital.  Used to watch the sunrise from an empty construction area.  About the only thing I really ripped off was toilet paper.  I wasn't into needles and that crap.  I had free run of the place, being on the overnight stat housekeeping crew, which was small.  I cleaned up after dead bodies, births, surgeries, and really contagious stuff, and I saw everything from gunshot wounds to crazy people walking out the doors in their little night gowns.  I walked freely through the guts of the hospital, the lab and records and the morgue.
A nurse once thought it would be funny to sprinkle trail mix all over a hallway and call a stat cleanup.  I don't put up with crap.  Showed my boss and he nearly got her fired.  You sneer down on the people mopping up the blood and puke, you get what's coming.  You don't trivialize 'stat' in any way, shape, or form.  Stat is sacred.
Another nurse failed to tell me the stat cleanup in the ER was after a family of lice.  I got a 4-story hospital locked down over that one after I heard a secretary joking on the phone about having to check them in at midnight.  By 4 a.m. I'd been all over that hospital, including labor and delivery, and that was considered serious contagion.  I mean, who wants to go have a baby and then find out the hospital has been locked down because some idiot nurse didn't consider an entire family ~*dripping*~ with body lice worthy of telling a housekeeper to gown out for precautions.  I even asked if there was a precaution on the room before I stripped and disinfected it.  I could have been covered in lice and eggs for hours just from rolling the sheets up and throwing them into a regular hamper, which also got laundry locked down, big time.  My boss tracked that nurse down, as well.  You could say MY boss pretty much ran that hospital when errors were made.
A charge nurse on the second floor once called me to clean up a glass breakage.  I arrived to find mercury beads strung out all over the room and into the carpeted hallway.  I put everything down in the middle of the hall and left it in everyone's way so they'd be forced to walk way around that room.  I found her and asked if the breakage was the blood pressure gauge, which was the old fashioned kind on the wall.  Yes, that was it.  I asked her if any of it got onto her clothing, or whoever it broke around.  She didn't know, had no clue if a patient had been in the room.  I asked who all walked into that room since the breakage, because the mercury was obviously strung out into the hallway, and then I asked her if any beds had been rolled in or out of the area through that hallway.  She got snotty with me, got in my face about how she didn't have time for this, who was *I* to be questioning *her*, etc.  I just smiled and called my boss.  Boy, did she get reamed.  Mercury poisoning is no joke, particularly in a hospital, and that stuff was ~everywhere~.  We even had to throw our shoes and clothes away.  I went home in scrubs and footies.  A special clean up crew in biohazard suits locked the floor down and cleaned EVERYTHING.  Think about this the next time you go visit someone in a hospital and see little kids running around touching everything.  Smile at the housekeepers.  They are doing excellent jobs.
I'm not against nurses.  I'm not saying nurses are inherently bad or stupid or negligent.  But I am saying don't take your housekeepers for granted.  Some of us just might be saving a few lives ourselves.  You never know.
Anyway, I hung out with a drug lord, but I was pretty 'clean'.  My only love was alcohol and the occasional brandy bong.  I was young and pretty, but I didn't care.  I never dated, except for one guy who bugged me to no end, but it took him forever to get anywhere with me.  Somewhere in my recent past I'd had a very scary ex-husband and a child he'd abused.  Dropped the kid at my mom's house and just drove to Phoenix for a 3 month vacation from having to deal.  I just couldn't face it.
Back to the story.  Rode out with this kid one day to a different part of town.  Went into a guy's house.  Heard that guy tell my guy that if such and such didn't happen, they would cut off his hand.  Everyone around us looked at me to see if I reacted.  I just smiled back, never flinched.  I had butchered plenty of animals growing up, I cleaned up after blood and gore and death in the hospital, just hearing someone threaten to cut off a hand was nothing to me.
I realize now that guy took me with him to witness, in the event they had killed him.  He trusted only me for that.  I would have been the one going back with his body to tell his girlfriend and call his parents.  Guess the alliance worked out.
Lamb through a slaughter house, oblivious.  Autistic.
And I was like that.  If I felt something I didn't want to deal with, I could cast it off.  If I felt any guilt or anguish or fear, I could walk away from it.  I was Mr. Spock.  I felt nothing, cared about nothing (except obvious breaches in protocol, like the mercury spill).  I felt no love, no need, no sympathy.  I turned completely off.
At the end of that summer, I was suddenly ready to come home.  Something was wrong, I didn't know what.  I just knew I had to get home.  Quit my job, left my key, never said goodbye to anyone.  I made it from Phoenix to my mom's house in MO in 23 hours flat.  The highway patrol in New Mexico never caught me, and truckers blocked them off so they couldn't.  I flew like the bats of hell were after me, slapping myself hard to stay awake, screaming to stay awake, freezing myself with the windows open and nearly falling asleep doing 90 through the night.
By the time I got home I could no longer move.  My fingers wouldn't unbend.  I could barely walk to the house.  I couldn't turn the knob, so I had to knock.  When they opened the door, I fell in.
I spent a week in bed in a deep fever and sweats, writhing in nightmares.  I had liver poisoning, setting off my first lupus flareup.  My dad is Mennonite, my mom is a health store nut, no one ever took me to a doctor.  I don't know how I lived.  I remember the haze, the series of dreams, the visions.  I remember a week went by without food or coherent conversation.  I remember God.
I was on a dusty road, leaving a house.  I had a robe, a staff, and a little pouch.  I was setting off on a journey.  As I shut the door and turned to the road, a figure appeared.  I didn't see a face.  He instructed me to follow the road and collect the treasures for my pouch.  He said I would know them when I see them.  Then he vanished, and I turned and started walking.
I walked a long, long way.  The road was dusty, and uninteresting.  I walked and walked and walked.  As I walked I felt heavy, tired, discontent.  I ached.  I thought, if I just take off the part that is making it hard, I can enjoy the walk.  So I peeled off some skin and tossed it to a bush.  I took off a fingertip and tossed it off the side of the road.  I slowly peeled more skin, and each time I did, I felt better, lighter, unencumbered.  The road slowly curved around, and still I walked and walked.  But it got easier and easier, because I kept picking parts of myself off and tossing them away.
Finally the road curved back to where I was heading back the direction I had come, and it still stretched off a great distance.  Walking was becoming so tedious that I thought I shall have to pick off more, and I did.  It was amazing how much I could pick off and throw away so I wouldn't have to feel hot and tired and thirsty, or sad and lonely.
After what seemed like days and days of walking, I arrived to a huge gulf, like a deep rip in the earth.  It was dark, and the sky was dark, and the other side was black.  I knew I had to cross it.  But how?  Who could cross something like that?  I looked over the edge, there was no way to climb down.  It was much too far to jump.  But I had been instructed to follow the road.
I was nearly to give up, standing there feeling angry at how ridiculous this was.  Then I heard a Laugh.  It creeped me out, and even though I had no skin left, I could feel where the hairs would have been going up in goosebumps.  A big face floated up out of the depths of the gorge, looking at me with hard mocking eyes, laughing at me.  He said he would help me over.  I said No, you'll eat me.  He laughed at my fear.  He said he was the only way I could get across, and I said No, you'll pull me down in there.  He laughed and floated his face very close to me at the edge, and as he got closer his face turned into my face, and I cried out and fell down in despair, because I knew then that I had destroyed myself, that I had brought this chasm into my life, and that there was no escape.
The despair was horrible.  I couldn't escape it.  The face laughed and laughed, and I cried and cried.  Should I just throw myself off now?  I could see no way out.  Is this the end?
Then the figure appeared next to me.  I still couldn't see his face.  He was very stern.  He said I told you to follow the road.  I wept with my head down and said I followed the road, but I can't follow it any more because it's broken, and there is no way across.  He said I gave you a pouch to put treasures in.  Show me the treasures you have found.  I wept and held out my empty pouch.  I said I saw no treasures.  He said What about the pretty rock?  You saw a pretty rock.  I said Yes, but it was just a rock.  I felt so terrible that I had not picked up that pretty rock to show him.  I realized I had seen other nice things along the way, and that I had nothing to show for my journey.  He stood there by me for awhile, silent while I wept and wept.  When I was nearly wept out, I asked him How do I go on?  What do I do now?  Tell me and I will do it.
He said You must go back the way you came.  You must find all the pieces you threw away and put them back on.  You cannot go on until you have them all back.  I said Ok, and in great gloom and sadness turned back to retrace my steps.  I could see now I was only a skeleton.  I had no flesh left.  I looked back and the figure was gone, but so was the laughing face.
The walk back was even longer than the walk forward.  I had to stop and search every bush, every rock, every part of the sides of the road for flakes of skin and pieces of fingers and all the other tiny little bits I'd torn off.  I tried to make them go back on my skeleton, but they were dried up, useless, unable to cling into place.  I put the shriveled pieces into my pouch and kept searching for more.
After a very very long time, what felt like weeks, I arrived back at the door I'd first left, still a skeleton in a robe.  The figure appeared.  He asked if I had found every piece.  I was very miserable and not sure, some of the pieces were so small and dried up I could have missed some.  He told me to give him the pouch.  It looked pathetic, a small pouch full of dried up flakes of skin.  How could that ever cover my body again?  They looked too small to ever be able to be usable.  I dreaded what he would say.  I handed him the pouch and looked away, feeling miserable.
He told me to shut my eyes, so I did.  He blew on me, and said Open your eyes.  All the skin and little bits were back in place, looking like they first had, and my robe was white.  And now I could see his face.  He had very stern but kind and loving eyes (I still can't tell this part without crying) and told me to start again.  I was to follow the road and collect the treasures I saw.  And I had a new command.  Never again mutilate myself so that I couldn't feel something.  Then he turned and went through a white door that appeared, and I was left with the road.
The rest of the vision went by quickly, as if I were seeing the future.  I saw myself gathering pretty stones and flowers, and my pouch growing large.  I saw myself happy and having a picnic with others by the side of the road when we got hungry.  I saw sadness and grief come over me and pass through, and I saw myself sing again.  I saw that I could feel every little breeze on my arms, and feel every blessed pain in my legs.
And when I reached the gorge, it was just a crack across the road.
I stepped over it.
And I woke up.  My fever was gone.  I got out of bed and ate some food, and have spent the next 20 years of my life following the road.
Back to today.
I've come a very long way since then. I've learned that not everyone can self motivate out of the dark, much less understand who they really are in it. I've tried to convey this idea to spirit-minded people who can bring up Jesus looking for lost lambs in the dark while simultaneously closing themselves off from the world, completely misunderstanding that the lost lambs in the dark are us. I've seen firsthand how sealing ourselves away from perceived dangers can create pockets of more actual very real danger that we purposely blind ourselves to. The ultimate question is how can someone who believes in any kind of God or spiritual source of goodness turn their back on someone they love right in front of their face? Much less other people. The conundrums that make our heads spin are Existential Aspie's holiday candy. I delight in turning my head inside out looking for why we are the way we are.
But back to my original reason for starting this post- taking a look at myself in the f(x) equation, given that the irreversible function of someone else's psyche response hinges on my input initiating the positive or negative emotional growth that stems out from the start of my presence. I can't help noticing that I am really good at bringing some really negative stuff out in some people. I don't mean negativity, I mean actual self destructive behaviors that were once hidden, and now displayed for the world to see. I've seen this happen time after time with a series of friends- it seems if I make it ok for them to be themselves with me, whoever those selves are at the time of my finding, there seems to be a sudden surge of bravery into dropping walls up to that point (but never further), and what the world really sees are skewed coping mechanisms and cliche masks, and the friend du jour mistaking my intention during my acceptance of them wearing fortress suits as I whisper into their minds for someone giving them permission to continue the act for everyone else, too. If it worked for me, surely it'll work for everyone. If I'll stick around through the junk, that must mean it's acceptable junk and they can come out and play now.
So I can't help wondering about my presence actually encouraging the broadcast of worse behaviors that were once hidden, even from me. I guess it's a good thing to see the 'real' person behind the hidden stuff, but my concern is that we're still not that far into the fortress, and now we've got fortresses cosplaying as real people, and it's still obvious to me that there is a kitten behind the dragon, a weeping girl behind the princess, a lonely heart on a beach no one else can reach.
I'm not afraid to go there, but I'm tired. And I have stuff to do. Lots and lots of stuff. I am very fortunate to have a couple of friends who see me on the inside, and what I'm trying to do. They've watched me go off the FOCUS track and implored me to GET TO WORK.
There are billions of minds out there I need to whisper into.
I think this post today is me stepping over that crack in the road.
